Sometimes the simplest of sandwiches can provide the greatest canvas to exhibit splendid creativity. The BLT—bacon, lettuce and tomato—says it all in the name. It couldn’t be more straightforward. There may be no other sandwich that is more ubiquitous on lunch menus the world over than the classic BLT, but that’s not to say it couldn’t use a few interesting alterations. Chef and part owner Kirk FitzGerald of The Bog Pub on MacArthur Boulevard in Pocasset has done just that with The Bog BLT.

The usual star of the show, bacon, is still front and center, but now shares the spotlight with panko-dusted fried green tomatoes. Grilled romaine lettuce adds to the flavor profile, but it’s the smokiness of the eggplant aioli that truly rounds out the taste complexity. The eggplant is smoked for three and a half hours before being pureed. “The bitterness of the green tomatoes really levels things out,” FitzGerald says. Served on sourdough bread that’s buttered and charred on the grill, The Bog BLT is unlike any other.

The Bog Pub has been open since 2012, and The Bog BLT has been on the menu from the start. The Bog BLT is similar to many of the dishes served at The Bog Pub in that people who return time after time (and there are many of them) simply can’t get past that one particular menu item that they love in order to try anything else. Double negatives aside, “I just can’t not get that!” is a familiar refrain from the chorus of happy and loyal customers. It’s understandable, too. FitzGerald runs a scratch kitchen where everything except the bread and cheese are made in house. The clam chowder is actually made to order! There are seasonal variations to the menu, but a number of items, like The Bog BLT and the chicken and waffles (another crowd favorite), remain throughout the year. “If I tried to take them off, people would kill me,” FitzGerald chuckles. The Bog BLT is available at both lunch and dinner.

The Bog Pub is easy to find for first-time visitors. Unfortunately, they find it just as they’re hurtling past it at 50+ miles per hour on MacArthur Boulevard (another name for Route 28 headed toward Falmouth). The folks at The Bog Pub realize this. That’s why their tag line is “It’s worth the U-turn”. The Bog BLT alone is worth the Uturn. Factor in all the other house-made offerings, and you’ll only fly by once. After that, you’ll know exactly where to turn for a great dining experience. The wide-ranging menu has plenty of intriguing twists to it, if…you…could…just…get…past…that…BLT.
