Joshua Schiff, Chatham Bars Inn farm manager, and Mary DeBartolo, owner of The Local Scoop, enjoy her company’s ice cream novelties in the CBI greenhouse in Brewster.

Mary DeBartolo of The Local Scoop has a cool new collaboration with farm-fresh ingredients from Joshua Schiff, manager of the eight-acre Chatham Bars Inn (CBI) Farm in Brewster. Five years ago, DeBartolo and partner Peter Kelly created The Cape Cod Popsicle line to showcase some of the food artisans and farmers on Cape Cod. They have continued to explore this locally inspired line, manufacturing everything in their shop on Route 6A in Orleans.

The Local Scoop’s original ice cream and frozen yogurt line includes “over-21” flavors, such as rum raisin ice cream made with Truro Vineyards spiced rum dipped in white chocolate, and a popsicle aptly named “The Vineyard”, with Truro Vineyards Cranberry wine ice cream dipped in Chequessett dark chocolate and sprinkled with Cape Cod Sea Salt. The “Salted Caramel” is frozen yogurt dipped in Chequessett Chocolate and McCrea’s caramel and sea salt. McCrea’s Caramel, out of Hyde Park, Massachusetts, is slow cooked in small batches, and Chequessett Chocolate is a little piece of heaven in North Truro that is one of very few chocolate manufacturers in Massachusetts.

DeBartolo explains, “I met with Josh and was blown away by what his staff are producing at the CBI farm. I fell in love with the idea of adding a healthy line to our very decadent frozen pops. We are so happy to be covering both bases now.”

Farm-fresh flavors in the works: cucumber-lime using CBIs salad burnet, a perennial herb that tastes like cucumber, with fresh lime juice and cucumber-infused tea; Gem Marigolds (which have a citrusy flavor) combined with fresh-squeezed pink grapefruit juice; and a watermelon lemonade flavored with freshly ground CBI mint.

The new pops are dairy-free, and local honey is the only sweetener, sparingly used. As the growing season continues, DeBartolo and Schiff will keep creating flavors that blur the lines between savory and sweet. Schiff said he is very excited to be joining forces with The Local Scoop to continue to expand the good food scene on Cape Cod.

The new line of frozen treats will be sold at the CBI farm, and the Chatham Bars Inn pool and beach bars will have coolers carrying The Local Scoop’s full line of ice cream and yogurt pops as well. Beyond the Orleans shop, The Local Scoop pops are available at the Pirate Museum in Provincetown, Far Land on the Beach at Herring Cove, Cape Cod Beer and other locations.
