CAIPIRINHA
This is Brazil’s national cocktail, made with the hard liquor cachaça (pronounced ka-SHA-suh), sugar and lime. Brazil’s most common distilled alcoholic beverage, cachaça is made from sugarcane. Alcohol is the result of fermentation of fresh sugarcane juice, which is then distilled. The Brazilians believe this cocktail, served before a heavy meal, helps to digest the meal. The drink is prepared by muddling the fruit and sugar together, then adding the liquor.
Ingredients
- ½ lime, cut into thin slices
- 2 teaspoons superfine sugar
- 2 ounces cachaça
- Crushed ice
Instructions
- Place the lime slices and sugar into an old-fashioned glass and crush them with a wooden pestle or wooden spoon. Fill glass with ice, pour in the cachaça, stir well, and serve. Makes one cocktail
