Last Bite… and Call: Boozy Affogato at Fishermen’s View

Life is filled with difficult choices. A meal is no respite from them. Soup or salad? Appetizer or no? The Jonah crab or the swordfish? Restaurant-goers don’t get a break when it comes to dessert, either. A sweet something, a coffee, or a digestif, perhaps? Chocolate-based or creamy? It’s enough to make one’s head spin (and mouth water one last time). Fishermen’s View alongside Sandwich Marina knows the struggle is real. They’ve made life just a bit simpler for you. Why choose when you can have both: the Boozy Affogato.

Affogato, from the Italian affogare (meaning “to drown”), is a classic Italian dessert combining ice cream or gelato with espresso. The hot espresso is poured over the ice cream or gelato, slowly melting it and creating an ever-changing taste and texture experience. At Fishermen’s View, Absolut Vanilla vodka and Borghetti Espresso liqueur are added to provide a little extra kick. Even if you skip the alcohol, it is still quite the decadent way to cap off a meal.

The Boozy Affogato arrives unassembled. Bartender Mitch McEachern places the coupe glass of vanilla ice cream before us. In one hand is the vodka and espresso liqueur. In the other, a shot of fresh, piping-hot espresso. He slowly pours both over the ice cream, and our spoons quickly cleave off some while scooping a bit of cocktail, which is getting creamier by the moment. The aroma of espresso fills the nose as the cool rich ice cream lands on the tongue. Slowly, the ice cream melts away and turns this spoon-able dessert into an espresso martini float of sorts, to be sipped and savored.

An old fish freezer plant situated at the mouth of Sandwich Marina had been shuttered for some time before finally being torn down in 2008. Brothers Bob and Denny Colbert – fishermen themselves with lobster boats and a dredger that fished for sea scallops – originally decided to open a retail market on the vacant lot to sell their seafood. Overcoming initial trepidations, the brothers, with brother Tom on board as well, expanded to open Fishermen’s View in the summer of 2016. The sea-to-table restaurant offers a creative menu filled with the freshest of catches in a myriad of styles, including sushi. For the landlubbers, a grilled rib eye steak and one heck of a smashburger are also available.

Whether enjoying the patio, a seat at one of the windows on the canal, or at the bar overlooking the marina, Fishermen’s View is a feast for the senses, including the ears, with an extensive lineup of great local musicians playing in the bar. The Boozy Affogato is the perfect coda, for no feast is complete without one final bite or one final sip…or both!
