On September 8, people from all across Cape Cod will participate in one of thousands of simultaneous rallies and demonstrations happening worldwide to signal the urgency of the climate crisis and the need for real climate leadership. The Falmouth action,  “S.O.S.: Cape Cod Rise for the Climate,” will call for community-led solutions to the climate crisis and demand that political leaders and decision makers step up their climate action.

S.O.S.: Cape Cod Rise for the Climate will be held at Surf Drive Beach, 56 Surf Drive, Falmouth from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and the public is urged to attend. The event is organized by 350MA-Cape Cod, the local chapter of the climate action group 350.org and 350Mass Better Future Project. The civic action group, Engage Falmouth, and the the Sierra Club’s Cape Cod group.

About the action:

After brief remarks from community leaders and advocates for the climate, participants  will create a massive, visual message using their bodies. Wearing life jackets, participants will lay in the sand, spelling out the universal signal of extreme distress:  S.O.S., to represent the urgency of the climate crisis and the need to act. An aerial photographer using a drone camera will record the message from above and share it with participants via social media using the hashtag: #riseforclimate. The action will conclude with a call for a personal commitment to take action on climate, whether engaging with legislators, serving on energy committees in local municipalities, or starting a green initiative at one’s place of worship. A handout of actions will be distributed. The demonstration will conclude by 11:00 a.m.

Speakers include:

Rosemary Dreger Carey, 350MA-Cape Cod and The Climate Reality Project.

Rosemary Dreger Carey, an organizer of the event for 350 CapeCod explains, “Here on Cape Cod we are already experiencing climate impacts, from coastal sea level rise, to extreme storms and the increasing number of heat waves. Yet we are not acting quickly enough to transition off the dangerous fossil fuels. On September 8th, we will literally draw a line in the sand and say, no more delays, no more obstacles. We have the tools we need to transition to 100% renewable energy at hand, and those solutions are good for our health, good for the planet, create good jobs, and support our local economies.”

Richard Johnson, Chair of the Natural Resources Committee of the League of Women Voters Falmouth adds, “Climate change affects us all, and we must all address it; as consumers, as voters and as activists. Urging local, regional and national authorities to adopt renewable and efficient energy technologies is as critical as making carbon-neutral choices personally and for our families. Meaningful change requires deep commitment.”

Representative Dylan Fernandes, D. Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket, submits, “As a millennial, there is no greater issue that will impact my generation and my children’s generation than climate change and rising sea levels. Although, in Massachusetts we are climate leaders, we have a lot more work to do to advance renewable energy, coastal resiliency, and carbon pricing.”

Cape Cod Group - Sierra Club, a co-sponsor of the event states, "The urgency of dealing with the effects of our planet's warming climate is now being felt by frontline coastal communities like Cape Cod.  We must use September 8th's RISE event to mobilize the needed political will to make changes big and small that will ensure future generations have a healthy and just quality of life."  Cape Cod Group - Sierra Club

Gary Rucinski –Citizens’ Climate Lobby member and candidate for Congress in the Massachusetts Fourth Congressional District said, “We can’t put off acting on climate change any longer if we want our children to be able to lead lives that aren’t repeatedly interrupted by climate catastrophes. Climate solutions must be fair, simple, and transparent and not burden in any way those least responsible for creating the problem.”

The mission of 350 Mass Cape Cod is to help protect our communities from the worst effects of climate change by taking action to advance climate-friendly policies, oppose fossil fuel infrastructure, and hold government officials accountable. 350 Mass Cape Cod is a local chapter of 350.org and 350Mass Better Future Project.
